DHA, also known as dihydroxyacetone, is listed with the FDA as a color additive for use in imparting color to the human body. However, it’s use in cosmetics-including sunless “tanning” products is restricted to external application (21 CFR 73.2150). According to the CFR, “externally applied” cosmetics are those products “applied only to external parts of the body and not to the lips or any body surface covered by mucous membrane” (21 CFR 70.3v). Airbrush ONE uses Norvell Sunless spray solutions, which contain no known toxins or allergens. However as with ANY substance, repeated exposure to, or inhalation of airborne matter may cause irritation or discomfort. When spraying DHA the FDA recommends the use of Protective undergarments, nose filter, lip balm, eye shields. Clients with health risks such as advanced allergies, pregnancy, respiratory problems, or diabetes should consult with their physician prior to any change and prior to any spray tan session. Some medications such as hormone replacement therapy, antibiotics or birth control pills may have an effect on your tan. DHA, is a simple carbohydrate that reacts solely with the outermost layer of your skin. DHA reacts to the free amino acids stored within the natural body oil on the skin’s surface. When the reaction occurs, the acids turn a slight rusty brown color. The color continues to darken over the next 24-72 hours depending on the individual. The color of a sunless tan is completely individual. Nothing is absolute when it comes to variations of skin types, coloration, how long it will last, or how dark it can get. ABO recommends following the Pre & Post guidelines listed on the ABO website: http:// www.airbrushone.com. DHA does not contain sunscreen and does not protect against sunburn.
